Yahoo! GeoPlanet. Exploring Places – without Maps – Martin Barnes

Yahoo! GeoPlanet is a resource for managing named places around the globe in a consistent, language-neutral way. It provides the geographic developer community with the vocabulary and grammar to traverse the world's geography, facilitating the geo-enablement of applications relevant to users and their businesses, by providing a means to recognize, locate and exploit geo-relevant data across the Web.

Martin Barnes

Martin has spent nearly 20 years working with geographic data. Within Yahoo! and previously as a key member of the Whereonearth team prior to the Yahoo! acquisition, he has been instrumental in the design, development, maintenance and evolution of the ‘WhereHaus’ Global Data repository that now underpins the Yahoo! spatial and geoinformatic technologies that enrich the Internet and drive its mobile potential. During these years in the geographic information domain he has become an authority on data capture, manipulation, integration and validation techniques. He is currently the Strategic Data Manager for the Yahoo! Geo Informatics Team in London.
